Twelve-year-old Tenzing can build a simple website and explain what an algorithm is. His parents enrolled him in a weekend coding class last year, proud that their son was learning skills that would matter for his future. He is genuinely talented, and his teachers say he has a bright future ahead in technology. But when his aunt gave him five thousand rupees during Losar, Tenzing spent it all within two days on games and snacks, without a second thought. Nobody had ever explained to him what saving meant, or why it mattered. We invest in their academic and technical skills, but money itself—how to save it, value it, protect it, and plan with it—is rarely taught directly, at home or in school.
Today, digital payments mean money moves invisibly, through phones, without children seeing cash change hands the way earlier generations did. Nuclear families mean fewer relatives around to model different money habits. And busy schedules, packed with school and tuition and screen time, leave little room for the slower, quieter lessons that used to happen naturally around the kitchen table.
Schools have adapted quickly to teach technical skills like computers, coding, robotics because they are visibly connected to future careers. Financial literacy has not caught up at the same pace, even though it shapes every single career a child might eventually choose.
A child who understands money early develops habits that last a lifetime: delayed gratification, an understanding that resources are limited and choices matter. A child who never learns this may grow into an adult who earns well but struggles to save, who understands complex technology but not a simple budget, who can build an app but cannot avoid a needless loan.
This is not about making children obsess over money. It is about giving them a basic, healthy relationship with it, the same way we teach them basic hygiene or basic manners—quietly, consistently, without turning it into a lecture.
Teaching Kids About Money:
We are raising a generation more technically capable than any before it, ready to build the future. Perhaps we owe them one more tool: the ability to understand and manage the money that skill will eventually earn them.
