There is a house everyone in the neighborhood still points to with quiet respect. It belongs to Mr. Subba, who spent thirty-two years working in a government department before retiring. His children grew up hearing one dream repeated at every family gathering: get a government job, and life is settled. Fixed salary, pension after retirement, respect in the samaj, a loan easily approved by any bank. For Mr. Subba's generation, this was not just a career choice. It was the whole plan.

His daughter, Tara, studied hard, gave several government exams, and did not clear them. Instead, she now works with a digital marketing firm in Gangtok, earning more than her father did—but she often feels the quiet weight of her father's quiet disappointment.

She understands his worry: her income varies per work and there is no pension waiting for her at sixty. If she falls sick for two months, her income does not continue the way her father's salary always did.

For decades, a government job meant security in a world with few other options. Private sector jobs were scarce locally, and moving to a city like Delhi or Kolkata felt like a big, uncertain step. The government job was not just about money; it was about certainty in an uncertain landscape.

A government job comes with built-in structures like pension, provident fund, defined retirement benefits. Someone earning through tourism, farming, or private business does not get any of that—but it can be built through their own planning, saving, and preparation.

This is not a flaw in these newer careers. It simply means the responsibility of preparing for the future has shifted from the institution to the individual, and many families have not yet adjusted their thinking to match that shift.

### Practical Advice for Non-Government Professionals: 1. If you or your children work outside government service, do not assume the future will sort itself out—plan retirement and emergencies deliberately. 2. Celebrate the newer paths—tourism, farming, business, freelancing—as genuinely respectable, not as a fallback from the government job dream. 3. Understand what "no pension" really means in practical terms, and start building your own version of one, however small, early. 4. Keep some savings for the off-season, when income naturally slows down. 5. Encourage children to build both a skill and a financial habit, not just a qualification.

Mr. Subba's generation built security through one door that was hard to open but safe once inside. Your generation has many more doors, but none of them come with the same built-in safety net. Perhaps the real question for our families today is not which career is more respectable, but whether we are teaching our children to build their own safety net, whatever door they choose to walk through.
