> Everyday money wisdom from Dentam farmers to Soreng homestay owners—how Sikkim families build quiet financial strength.

## Article

Every town seems to carry its own quiet story, if you know how to listen hard enough.

In Dentam, there is a cardamom farmer named Ram Bahadur who remembers the year a fungal disease wiped out most of his crop. His family had no savings large enough to absorb that year's loss, and they survived only because a neighbour lent them money until the next season. Ram still helps that same neighbour's grandchildren today, because he has never forgotten what that kindness meant during the hardest year of his life.

In Soreng, a young couple runs a small homestay they built from a loan taken five years ago. The first two years were difficult, with few tourists finding their way to their village. They almost gave up. But they kept a small portion of every booking aside, no matter how little, calling it their "chaindo din ko paisa" — money for bad days. When the pandemic slowed tourism to a halt for months, that small saved fund kept their family fed until travellers slowly began returning to the hills.

In Gangtok, a retired government employee named Mrs. Bhutia has spent the last decade quietly running a small savings group with six other women from her neighbourhood. Each month, they contribute a fixed small amount, and one member receives the pooled sum on rotation. It is simple, trust-based, and has helped each woman fund something meaningful over the years: a daughter's college fees, a small home repair, a modest family trip.

None of these people would call themselves financially sophisticated. They have never used complicated financial terms, and most would feel uncomfortable in a bank's boardroom. Yet each of them has, in their own way, discovered a truth that sits at the heart of good money management: setting something aside deliberately, for a specific purpose, protects a family when circumstances change unexpectedly.

### Everyday Financial Wisdom: 1. Look for quiet financial wisdom—it often exists, even if nobody calls it "financial planning." 2. Build an emergency fund specifically for bad days, even if you add to it slowly and irregularly. 3. Remember and honour moments when community support carried your family through hardship, and look for ways to pass that forward. 4. Share these everyday money stories within your own family, so children grow up understanding that financial wisdom does not require formal training, only consistency.

The hills are full of quiet, unassuming financial wisdom, carried not in textbooks but in the lived experience of farmers, drivers, homemakers, and shopkeepers who have weathered hard seasons and come out steadier for it.
